DOUBLE JOURNAL ENTRY #1:  Digital Knowledge is Power

Quote: "The new classroom should teach the huge array of complex skills that come under the heading of digital literacy. And it should make students accountable on the Web, where they should regularly be aiming, from grade-school on, to contribute to a wide range of wiki projects." (Heffernan)
Reaction: Peter Drucker, known as the father of modern management, in the 1950's predicted that the job market would eventually move into a knowledge era; without a doubt we have arrived. Many jobs of the future will depend on an individual's ability to use technology effectively and efficiently to make sound decisions and to take calculated risks. Multinational companies have become more prevalent and require employees to be able to work collaboratively using means such as Webcasting, podcasting, Skype, smartphones, computers, and technology that hasn't even yet been created. What we need to do in the classrooms is teach students to become so knowledgeable about technology that it becomes second nature for them to use it on the job and in their personal lives. However, we can never overlook the importance of people skills; the challenge will be to teach students how to communicate with others digitally and convey the message in a meaningful way.
Dr. Mark Bailey, Pacific University Oregon, has compiled a list of online digital media resources geared toward different grade levels. I particularly like the listings under the subtitles: Lesson Ideas by Grade Level; Using Media in Classrooms; and Digital Media for Language Learning. (Bailey)

  1. Hi Kim,
You are so close to having the necessary content added to your blog. I'm going to allot some time on Tuesday to make additions/corrections to blogs before grading.
I'd like you to add my blog to your favorites link. (voyager46) You will find this on homepage of syllabus. Also, your reaction to the quote from Education Needs an Upgrade should be at least 100 words. Finally, make sure that you find an additional resource to post that has a connection to the original article. You may use a video, link, article, etc... Post this additional resource. Click on other students' blogs for examples from student blog spreadsheet. I'll be glad to help you!
    P.S. I can't wait to discuss Project-Based Learning!

  2. This is a very good quote and I love your reaction. How can we expect to advance without having the majority of the people master the technology we already have. We have computers and other high tech devices but not a big enough group of the population have truely mastered it. With so few masters we have very few minds looking to increase and expand upon what we have because everyone else is still confused on how to use the technology of today. Good job, kepp up the good work :)

  3. Kimberly,
The way you explain this quote is perfect. You really go into depth with it and you can tell you feel strong on the subject. I, also, feel that way. We can not lose the technique of people skills because no matter what year it is we will always have to be face to face to people rather it is on Skype or in person. Awesome journal entry!

  4. Your reaction is phenomenal. I really enjoyed the way you reflected on past predictions of technological advances and how they were proven right it really shows what advances are yet to be made and how much technology will rapidly improve in our lifetime.
